10 Best Robot Games Of All Time

Get ready for some mechanical mayhem as we check out the 10 best robot games of all time!

Robots; ever since I saw the MegaZord for the very first time, I’ve been hooked on the idea of controlling one to batter down the forces of evil.

While that isn’t ever going to happen in my lifetime, I can fulfil that fantasy by playing my favourite mecha-inspired games.

Who said Megatron was the only one that could have any fun, right?

From titles where players fight alongside their mecha counterparts to strategic battles that are guaranteed to make your brain hurt, I’ve listed 10 of the greatest robot games ever made for you to get excited over.

Check out which titles made the cut below!

10. Zone of the Enders: The 2nd Runner (2003) best robot games - Zone of the Enders: The 2nd Runner PS2 game case

Let’s kick off this list of the best robot games with a classic PS2 title; Zone of the Enders: The 2nd Runner.

A mining team ambushed, a battle robot discovered, and a fight to defeat an evil force.

Add the tried-and-tested formula that Konami add into every single one of their Anime games, and you’ve got one heck of a title on your hands.

If you’ve played the first Zone of the Enders game, then you’ll already know what to expect from the sequel. We’re talking giant action in giant mecha warriors with energy swords.

What a sentence to write!

Instead of wandering around a map, players complete mission after mission like the games of old, automatically being taken to the next area.

Get better at controlling Jehuty, your mecha solider in VR training modes, and battle your friends in the epic multiplayer mode!

9. Supreme Commander 2 (2010) best robot games - Supreme Commander 2 game case cover art Xbox 360

Supreme Commander 2 really is one of those Xbox games that never, ever gets old. Even in 2022, I’m still taking my time getting nerdy over the strategic elements of this massive title.

Just keeping track of what’s going on on the battlefield leaves me needing to lie down!

Juggling war tactics while making sure you have the mass and energy to build resources and then protecting them is a full time job, you know!

I’m going to warn you now; if you have zero patience, then this game isn’t going to be for you. It’s a great title, but it’s ranked at Number 9 because, while it looks great, it definitely isn’t for everyone.

You need time and a mind for warfare to succeed in this game. Still, the Skirmish mode is a great place to hone those skills and get into the mindset needed for success.

And, once you’ve built said skillset, you can play up to 7 other players in the multiplayer mode.

Just make sure they all know less about the game than you do; that way you’re sure to win!

8. Armored Core: For Answer (2008) best robot games - Armored Core: For Answer game case cover art PS3

Armored Core: For Answer takes the 8th spot in this list of the best robot games of all time!

The Armored Core series is huge, with ‘For Answer’ making up the 13th game in the collection.

In true ‘post-apocalyptic, every person for themselves’ style, you play as a mercenary fighting for whoever pays you more.

Who you fight for and who you help win the war is entirely up to you; let your wallet make the decisions here and not your conscience!

Take a look at that robot and tell me you’re not excited to grab a copy of this game!

The levels in Armored Core: For Answer are incredibly detailed and feature lots of elements for you to delve into.

From attacking specific targets to acquiring certain items that will help your side win the war, there are lots of factors to consider other than blowing everything up.

Although that still is a main feature of the game!

Customise mechas, join friends in co-op, and battle opponents in all out war via Deathmatches. This really is the game that keeps on giving!

7. Virtual On: Cyber Troopers (1996) best robot games - Virtual On Cyber Trooper game case cover art Sega Saturn

The Sega Saturn played host to one of my favourite games of the ’90s, Virtual On: Cyber Troopers!

How many of you can remember playing this in the arcade? This home port allowed gamers to take control of their favourite droids right from their sofa.

And yes, one of them is wearing camouflage trousers.

Ok, so the 8 droids available might not look as flashy as the characters in the title at Number 4 below, but back in ’96, they were everything.

The ten game arenas felt like stepping right into an episode of Power Rangers, just with massive robots battling each other for the whole episode rather than seeing Putty Patrollers jumping around.

The Virtual Training elements made me wonder what the future would be like (spoiler – I’m still not fighting robots in real life), and the chance to play against other players via serial link felt phenomenal back in the day!

6. Front Mission 3 (1999) best robot games - Front Mission 3 PS1 game case cover art

Front Mission 3 takes us all the way back to the days of the best PS1 games. For those gamers that thrive from turn-based battles, this is an absolute must have.

We’re talking tactical gameplay like you’ve never experienced before. If you thought Risk was stressful, then you’ve seen nothing yet.

Think Advance Wars but on a larger scale and with much more devastating consequences for your robots. Aim for weak spots using different rated weapons, thinking four moves ahead at any given time if you have a hope of succeeding.

Like the Gym Leaders in the best Pokemon games, each pilot has a signature moveset and set of weapons. Learn new skills by picking up points during battles and pull out special moves on the battlefield.

While most of the gameplay takes place on the field, there are explorative elements that take place via a made-up internet.

What I like about Front Mission 3 is that it’s one of those games where you get out what you put into it. Exploration isn’t necessary to complete the game, but the more digging you do, the better the game will be.

It’s the best way to get more money and unlock better gear for your mechas, and it makes the game last much longer too!

5. Daemon X Machina (2019) best robot games - Daemon X Machina game case Nintendo Switch

Daemon X Machina takes the 5th spot in this list of the best robot games of all time!

For those of you that worry whenever a blood moon appears in BotW, imagine your fear if you saw the moon literally tear apart.

Fighting in an apocalyptic world, you must slay robots in locations all over the globe. Jump aboard a super-powerful mecha with some of the best weapons you’ve ever seen and equip more as you destroy your enemies.

In what will become a very recurring theme throughout this article, you’re fighting to defend the Earth from destruction.

Mecha warriors have always been my favourite characters in games, and modding them with new parts always makes me feel like a kid in a candy store.

But when I see massive monsters like that, I still want to run in the opposite direction! That thing makes the Guardians in BotW look like soft toys!

Thank goodness there’s a coop mode so you can tackle them with a friend!

4. Gundam Breaker 3 (2016) best robot games - Gundam Breaker 3 PS4 game case cover art

You guys might remember Gundam Breaker 3 as being the winner of our best Gundam games of all time.

There were so many to choose from, but this title has all the elements in it that make the series so damn great.

I mean, if I’m being honest, it’s like Gundam Breaker 2 after an intense workout session over a serious of months, but is that a bad thing? GB2 was awesome, and if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!

So what do I like the most about this title?

Well, the epic Monolith Demolition and Core Assault modes are worth the purchase price alone. Then there’s jumping into Team Deathmatches with your friends.

With Goldeneye officially coming to Switch, this multiplayer mode will tie me over nicely until Bond strikes!

Just look at the graphics of this game too. I mean, didn’t we all wish to see stuff like this when we were kids?

It’s why I had all the Zords from Power Rangers!

If you love the finishing moves from Mortal Kombat, then these killer blows in this game will make you drool all over your controller too. Gnarly stuff!

3. Earth Defense Force 4.1 – The Shadow of New Despair (2015) best robot games - Earth Defence Force 4.1 The Shadow Of A New..</body></html>
